Prayers of the Faithful for Lent

Lent gives the Church a renewed focus on conversion, prayer, and care for those in need. The intentions can reflect that focus through direct requests for mercy, strength, and help for people carrying heavy burdens. They should not become reminders about fasting rules or a lesson on how the congregation ought to behave. These are general Lenten sets, to be adapted with the readings and the parish’s actual circumstances in view. Choose one complete option and keep any addition brief. Celebrations with particular ritual intercessions, such as the scrutinies, need their proper texts and cannot be replaced by a general template.

PRIEST · INTRODUCTION

Trusting in the mercy of God, let us pray for our own needs and for the needs of the whole world.

ALL RESPOND

Lord, hear our prayer.

For Pope Leo XIV and our bishop, that the Lord may grant them strength and peace in their ministry.

We pray to the Lord.

For people denied freedom or fair treatment, that the Lord may uphold their dignity and open the way to justice.

For families separated by conflict or hardship, that the Lord may protect them and bring comfort to those who wait.

For those seeking forgiveness and a new beginning, that God may grant courage, healing, and peace through his mercy.

Preparing these prayers.

Should every Lenten intention mention fasting or penance?

No. A few restrained seasonal references are enough. Pray directly for the needs of people rather than giving the congregation instructions about Lenten practice.

Can these replace the intercessions at the scrutinies?

No. The scrutinies belong to the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults and include their own ritual texts. The parish should use the approved rite.

Are these Good Friday intercessions?

No. Good Friday has the Solemn Intercessions in the Roman Missal. These ordinary six-intention sets are for suitable Masses during Lent.
