Prayers of the Faithful for Leaders and Government
Prayer for public leaders asks that authority be exercised for the good of the people it serves. It is not an endorsement of a party, officeholder, or policy platform. These intentions remember national and local responsibilities, people affected by public decisions, and the needs of those serving under pressure. Use a verified office title or collective wording when names would distract from the prayer. For a national celebration, keep the wider world present: love for one’s country need not exclude concern for neighbouring peoples or people who have made a new home there.

Let us ask God to guide those who serve in public life and protect the people entrusted to their care.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church, that God may give her courage to serve the common good with truthfulness, humility, and concern for the vulnerable.
We pray to the Lord.
For national and local leaders, that the Lord may grant integrity, sound judgement, and a readiness to listen before making decisions.
We pray to the Lord.
For people struggling to obtain housing, food, or essential services, that God may bring help and guide effective responses to their needs.
We pray to the Lord.
For public servants carrying difficult responsibilities, that the Lord may sustain their honest work and protect them from corruption and fear.
We pray to the Lord.
For those who have died in service to their communities, that Christ may grant them peace and comfort the people who mourn.
We pray to the Lord.
For all who share this country, that God may deepen mutual respect and guide our participation in public life with generosity.
We pray to the Lord.

Father of all peoples, hear our prayer. Grant wisdom to those in authority and peace to those they serve. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Naming a country or officeholder
A country name may replace “this country” when appropriate. Check an officeholder’s name and role, and do not turn the prayer into a description of their achievements or failings.
During an election
Pray for wisdom, honesty, peaceful participation, and the wellbeing of everyone affected. Avoid coded slogans or wording that makes the congregational response a declaration of support for a candidate.

Should we pray for leaders we disagree with?
A prayer for wisdom, integrity, and just service does not express agreement with every action of a leader. It asks for the good of the people affected by public authority.
Can the intentions name Nigeria or another country?
Yes, where relevant. Verify the local context and retain concern for other peoples. A country-name change alone does not make a set a distinct official national text.
Can employees in government offices be included?
Yes. Public service includes many people beyond elected leaders. The fourth petition can name local-government staff or another appropriate group.
