Prayers of the Faithful for Women
Prayer for women should recognise many different lives, not assume that every woman is a mother or has the same needs. These intentions include women’s contributions to the Church and community, access to safety and opportunity, the burden of violence, and the work of caring for others. They can support International Women’s Day or another appropriate parish focus without making a civil observance a liturgical feast. Keep personal stories private unless permission has been given. In a school or workplace setting, adapt examples to the actual community rather than importing an unrelated campaign message.

For those shaping education and employment, that the Lord may guide decisions that protect women’s dignity and open fair opportunities.
We pray to the Lord.
For women facing violence, exploitation, or unsafe homes, that God may bring protection, trustworthy help, and freedom from fear.
We pray to the Lord.
For women balancing work, caring responsibilities, and personal hardship, that the Lord may provide rest, practical support, and understanding companions.
We pray to the Lord.
For women who have died, especially those whose service went unrecognised, that Christ may receive them into peace and comfort their families.
We pray to the Lord.
For our community, that the Holy Spirit may deepen respectful listening and help us welcome the gifts and experiences of every woman.

For International Women’s Day
Name the observance if it is part of the local context, while retaining the celebration’s proper liturgical identity. A brief intention can ask for safety, fair opportunity, and recognition of women’s contributions.
Women are not a single family role
Motherhood may be important to the occasion, but do not assume it describes every woman present. Include single women, widows, religious sisters, carers, and others without turning the prayer into a long checklist.

Can we use these on Mother’s Day?
Some themes overlap, but Mother’s Day has a more specific family context. Adapt sensitively for people facing bereavement, infertility, estrangement, or other painful experiences.
Should we name a local woman being honoured?
With permission, one brief name may be included. Keep an account of achievements in a tribute or announcement rather than stretching the intercession into a speech.
Can the prayer mention violence against women?
Yes. Use clear, compassionate language asking for safety and support. Avoid graphic details or information that could identify someone without consent.
