A retreat gives people time to pray, but those gathered still bring the concerns of their families, work, and communities with them. The intentions can ask for guidance, renewed faith, and peace without assuming that everyone has had the same experience of the retreat. These sets are prepared for a retreat Mass and keep the needs of the wider Church and world present. Choose one option and adapt a single petition to the group’s actual circumstances. If the prayer is used outside Mass, the leader should arrange its introduction and conclusion appropriately. Avoid instructions about what participants should have learned or felt.

Should the petitions summarise the retreat talks?
No. A simple request for grace or guidance is more fitting than a summary of lessons. The prayers should not tell participants what their experience ought to have been.
Can these be used at the beginning or end of a retreat?
Yes. At the beginning, ask for peace and openness to God’s help; at the end, ask for strength in the days ahead. One small adjustment is enough.
What if the retreat prayer is not a Mass?
The leader can use suitable intercessions within that prayer gathering’s structure. Do not label a lay-led gathering as Mass or assign priestly roles inaccurately.
