Prayers of the Faithful for Christmas
At Christmas, the Church celebrates the birth of Christ and brings the needs of the world before God with renewed hope. The intentions can express that joy without assuming that everyone present is having an easy or happy season. These sets include a focused prayer for families and people facing loneliness or hardship, alongside the ordinary breadth of the Universal Prayer. They are general Christmas examples rather than a substitute for checking the readings of a particular Mass. Choose one set, confirm the celebration, and adapt one need if appropriate. Keep the petitions simple enough for visitors and regular parishioners to pray together.

Rejoicing in the birth of our Saviour, let us pray to the Father for the needs of all his children.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For all who proclaim the Gospel, that the Holy Spirit may give them courage, wisdom, and gentleness in their service.
We pray to the Lord.
For those responsible for public life, that God may strengthen their efforts to secure food, shelter, and safety for all.
We pray to the Lord.
For those who feel forgotten, especially the housebound and lonely, that God may comfort them through the presence of others.
We pray to the Lord.
For families celebrating Christmas, and those who find this season difficult, that God may bring peace, companionship, and lasting hope.

For those who have gone before us in faith, that the risen Lord may bring them to the fullness of life.

Christmas Day, Vigil, Night and Dawn: choose the right Mass
Christmas has distinct Masses, not one set of readings for every celebration. Before choosing a reading-specific draft, confirm whether the parish is celebrating the Vigil, Mass during the Night, Mass at Dawn or Mass during the Day.
In the USCCB calendar, the Vigil Gospel is Matthew 1:1–25, with the shorter option Matthew 1:18–25; the Night Gospel is Luke 2:1–14; Dawn uses Luke 2:15–20; and Day uses John 1:1–18, with the shorter option John 1:1–5, 9–14. These references identify the options; do not combine the different Masses into an invented reading set.
The Christmas Vigil is celebrated on Christmas Eve, while the Night Mass need not begin at exactly midnight. The morning Mass of 24 December is not automatically the Christmas Vigil. Our general Christmas examples above are not labeled as matching all four sets of readings.
Open the calendar, select the appropriate Christmas Mass choice, and check the displayed references before printing. One or two natural themes from the chosen readings are enough; the intentions should still pray for actual needs.

Can these be used at Midnight Mass?
They can be adapted for that celebration after checking its readings and local needs. Christmas has different Mass formularies, so label the finished set accurately.
Should the petitions retell the Nativity story?
No. A short Christmas introduction and one or two fitting petitions are enough. The intentions should ask for help rather than repeat the Gospel narrative.
How do we include people grieving at Christmas?
Use gentle wording for those who find the season difficult or miss loved ones. Acknowledge their needs without assuming every household is celebrating in the same way.
