Prayers of the Faithful for a Catholic Memorial Mass
When a parish arranges a Memorial Mass for someone who has died, the intercessions still ask for God's mercy for the deceased and comfort for the bereaved. A remembrance Mass is not simply a repeat of every action from a funeral; the priest should confirm the permitted celebration and its ritual details.
Use the person's name and omit wording that assumes an immediate burial or a body present in the church. The rules for Masses for the Dead and the choice of variable texts are set out in GIRM 379–385. For an annual remembrance, the death-anniversary page has more specific wording.
Replacement deceased intention — use instead of an existing intention, not in addition: For [Name], whom we remember in this Mass, that the Lord may grant forgiveness, eternal rest, and the joy of his presence.
Preparing funeral intentions in Ireland or Australia
These are original examples for parish review, not official national texts for Ireland or Australia. Confirm the local wording of the response, the reader and the form of the funeral celebration with the priest before printing.
Guidance published by the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference asks families who compose intentions to consult the celebrant. In Australia, the Diocese of Ballarat's funeral guidelines emphasize choosing people able to read the prayers clearly. Those are useful planning principles; one diocese's detailed arrangements should not be presented as rules for every Australian parish.
For the funeral of a farmer
A farmer's work can be acknowledged in one restrained phrase while the petition remains a prayer for mercy and eternal life. Do not turn the intentions into a biography or describe heaven as a farm or harvest.
The replacement below is original wording, not a quotation from a poem called “A Farmer's Prayer.” Use it instead of the set's deceased intention, with the person's name confirmed by the family.

What should the funeral intentions include?
Pray for the person who has died, for mourners, and for the wider needs of the Church and the world. GIRM 70 allows the series to reflect a funeral more closely.
Can the family write or edit the intentions?
The family may help prepare them in consultation with the priest. Use brief petitions the whole congregation can share, and confirm names and sensitive details before the lector receives the final copy.
Should we say that the deceased is already in heaven?
A funeral petition entrusts the deceased to God’s mercy and asks for eternal life. These examples express Christian hope without declaring a particular person’s eternal destiny.
What if the funeral service is not a Mass?
Ask the parish which form of the approved funeral rite will be used and adapt the intercessions with the celebrant. Do not treat a Funeral Mass outline as the order for every vigil, funeral liturgy, or committal.
