Prayers of the Faithful for the Deceased
Praying for the dead places those we love within God’s mercy while making room for the sorrow of the living. These intentions can be adapted at an ordinary Mass remembering departed loved ones, including those who have no one to pray for them. They are not a funeral rite or a guarantee about the state of a particular soul. A name may be included with the family’s agreement, but a long obituary belongs elsewhere. Trusting in the mercy of God and the hope of the resurrection, let us pray for the living and the dead.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church, that Christ may strengthen our hope in the resurrection and sustain our ministry to those who mourn.
We pray to the Lord.
For communities living with conflict and preventable loss of life, that God may guide their leaders towards protection, justice, and peace.
We pray to the Lord.
For people grieving in loneliness, especially those unable to attend a farewell, that the Lord may bring comfort and faithful companions.
We pray to the Lord.
For those who carry unfinished conversations or painful memories, that God may grant peace and help them entrust their loved ones to mercy.
We pray to the Lord.
For all the faithful departed, especially those most in need of prayer, that God may cleanse them from sin and receive them into joy.
We pray to the Lord.
For our parish and all who remember a loved one today, that Christ may sustain our faith and strengthen our care for one another.

Departed loved ones and souls in purgatory
The fifth petition asks for mercy and purification without pretending to know an individual’s spiritual state. Keep that prayer distinct from a tribute that simply lists achievements or assumes a conclusion about the person.
A birthday or another day of remembrance
An ordinary remembrance can note that a family is remembering someone on a birthday or another significant day. Do not change the deceased person into the subject of a birthday blessing intended for someone living.

Can we pray for souls in purgatory?
Yes. The petition asking God to cleanse the departed from sin and receive them into joy expresses that concern without claiming knowledge about a particular person.
Must every person be named?
No. Collective prayer includes loved ones whose names are not read aloud. If names are used, check pronunciation, permission, and the practical length of the list.
Is this the same as a funeral or All Souls’ Day set?
The themes overlap, but the context differs. Use funeral guidance for the funeral celebration and the All Souls’ page for that observance; do not substitute this page for a prescribed rite.
