Prayers of the Faithful for the Church
An intention for the Church is broader than a prayer for one parish or for clergy alone. It can remember the proclamation of the Gospel, Christians under pressure, the formation of the young, and the responsibility to protect vulnerable people. These prayers hold those needs alongside the world’s suffering. They avoid treating the Church’s needs as a list of institutional successes or complaints. When adapting the set, choose one concrete concern that people can understand at first hearing. A local announcement or detailed report belongs elsewhere, even when the concern behind it is important.

Gathered as God’s people, let us bring before him the needs of the Church and the whole world.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church in every land, that the Holy Spirit may renew her witness to the Gospel and strengthen her service of the poor.
We pray to the Lord.
For rulers and communities divided by mistrust, that God may open paths of dialogue and protect people denied basic freedoms.
We pray to the Lord.
For those harmed within Christian communities, that the Lord may bring safety, truthful accountability, and compassionate support to their lives.
We pray to the Lord.
For catechists, missionaries, and all who share the faith, that God may grant wisdom, humility, and perseverance in their work.
We pray to the Lord.
For departed members of the Church, especially those whose faithful service was unnoticed, that Christ may welcome them into his peace.
We pray to the Lord.
For our parish, that the Lord may make our welcome sincere and help every person find a place to belong and serve.

Choose a Church need, not a slogan
Faith formation, mission, safeguarding, reconciliation, and support for isolated communities are understandable subjects. Ask for God’s help in one need rather than reciting an institutional agenda.
Include people beyond visible leadership
Clergy and bishops need prayer, but so do lay ministers, families, converts, volunteers, and Christians who cannot worship freely. Rotate particular needs across successive celebrations.

Must the first petition name the pope and bishop?
A prayer for the Church can name them, but it need not use the same names in every set. Follow parish practice and verify any name before reading.
How can we pray about harm within the Church?
Use truthful, restrained language that asks for protection, healing, and accountability. Do not disclose identities, allegations, or private details without proper authority and consent.
Is praying for the Church the same as praying for our parish?
They overlap, but are not identical. One intention can hold the worldwide Church in prayer while another addresses the concrete needs of the local community.
