Birthday Mass Intentions and Prayers of the Faithful
A birthday is a fitting moment to thank God for the gift of life and ask his care for the year ahead. At Mass, that personal thanksgiving belongs within the prayer of the whole Church. These sets include a short intention for the person celebrating, while remembering the world, people in difficulty, the dead, and the parish community. Replace [Name] with the person’s first name, or use “those celebrating birthdays” for a shared celebration. Choose one complete set and adjust any local need before printing. The priest can review the introduction, intentions, and conclusion together.

Requesting a birthday Mass intention
A birthday Mass intention is a request to have Mass offered for someone. It is different from the intentions announced during the Universal Prayer. Contact the parish office with the person’s name, the occasion and your preferred date.
Request example: Please arrange a Mass for Maria’s intentions, in thanksgiving for her birthday, on 12 October if that date is available.
Short request wording: In thanksgiving for David’s birthday and for God’s care in the year ahead.
Ask the parish about its arrangements for an offering. An offering is not the price of a prayer, and inability to give should not prevent you from asking. Canon 945 §2 commends celebrating for the intentions of the faithful, especially those in need, even without an offering.
A brief birthday introduction to Mass
The welcome at the beginning of Mass is not the priest’s introduction to the Universal Prayer later in the celebration. GIRM 50 permits a very brief introduction to the Mass of the day after the greeting.
Original welcome example: We gather to celebrate this Mass and thank God for the gift of life, remembering Anna on her birthday. May our worship renew our trust in his care.
Ask the celebrant to approve the wording and its place. This is a general welcome, not a prescribed liturgical formula or a replacement for the greeting, Collect or other texts of the Missal.

Can the birthday person be named in the intentions?
Yes. A short petition may name the person and ask for God’s blessing. A first name is usually enough; lengthy accounts of achievements or personal history can be left outside the intentions.
Should every petition be about the birthday?
No. Keep the wider prayer of the Church present. These examples include one birthday petition alongside prayers for the Church, the world, people in difficulty, the dead, and the local community.
Can I use these for an 18th, 50th, or 80th birthday?
Yes. Add the age if it is useful, or leave it out. Choose a simple request that suits the person’s circumstances, such as health, guidance, companionship, or peace.
