Prayers of the Faithful for Workers
Work includes paid employment, farming, unpaid care, volunteering, and the effort of finding a job. These intentions ask for safe conditions, fair treatment, meaningful work, and support when a livelihood is uncertain. They can be adapted for Labor Day, Labour Day, a retirement Mass, or a community whose work is changing. Check the local date before naming a civil observance. A prayer for workers should not become an advertisement for an employer or imply that someone’s worth depends on productivity. Include people unable to work and those whose contributions receive little recognition.

God knows the work of our hands and the needs of our homes. Let us bring our prayers before him.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church, that God may strengthen her support for working people and her care for those whose livelihoods are insecure.
We pray to the Lord.
For employers and those responsible for working conditions, that the Lord may guide fair decisions and protect the dignity of every worker.
We pray to the Lord.
For people without work or unable to work through illness or disability, that God may provide security, companionship, and needed assistance.
We pray to the Lord.
For workers and farmers facing danger, exhaustion, or uncertain income, that the Lord may grant protection and sustain the fruits of their labour.
We pray to the Lord.
For those who have died through workplace accidents and for departed colleagues, that Christ may receive them into peace and console their families.
We pray to the Lord.
For our community, that God may help us value unpaid service, support those beginning retirement, and make room for rest and family life.
We pray to the Lord.

Father of goodness, hear our prayers. Bless honest work, protect those in need, and teach us to share your gifts. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For farmers and agricultural communities
The fourth petition names farmers alongside other workers. Where useful, focus it on the verified need: a difficult season, uncertain income, safety, or care for the land. Do not invent local weather conditions.
For retirement
Replace the occasion petition with: “For those beginning retirement, that God may grant peace in change, renewed companionship, and meaningful ways to share their gifts.” Teacher retirement can use the more specific teachers page.

Can these intentions be used on Labor Day or Labour Day?
Yes, after checking the local date and the liturgical celebration. The spelling and civil calendar differ across countries; the core prayer concerns workers and their needs.
Should unemployed people have a separate petition?
It is helpful to remember them explicitly, as this set does. Keep their dignity central and do not imply that unemployment is evidence of laziness or personal failure.
Can a retiring employee be named?
With permission, add a brief name to the retirement adaptation. Put career achievements, length of service, and public thanks into a separate tribute.
