Prayers of the Faithful for Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day brings prayer for people killed in war and for those whose lives continue to carry its wounds. A parish intention can remember the dead, support the bereaved, and ask for lasting peace without glorifying violence or assuming that everyone shares the same national story. These sets use restrained language and retain the wider needs of the Church and the world. Choose one option and adapt a local name or observance carefully. A civil ceremony and Mass have different structures, and the civil date does not automatically determine the liturgical celebration. Confirm the setting before preparing the final prayer sheet.

PRIEST · INTRODUCTION
Remembering those who have died through war, let us pray to God for them and for a world at peace.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Church in places of poverty and conflict, that God may provide faithful ministers and sustain her works of mercy.
We pray to the Lord.
For all nations, that God may turn hearts toward peace and grant wisdom to those who hold public office.
We pray to the Lord.
For those whose work is insecure or whose strength is failing, that God may provide support and renew their courage.
We pray to the Lord.
For veterans and all carrying the wounds of war, that God may bring healing and the support they need.
We pray to the Lord.
For all who have died through war, that the Lord may receive them in mercy and grant them eternal rest.
We pray to the Lord.
For the needs we carry in our hearts, that God may hear our prayer and hold us close in his care.
We pray to the Lord.

God of mercy and peace, hear our prayers. Grant rest to the dead, comfort to the bereaved, and lasting peace among nations. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Memorial Day prayers in the United States
Memorial Day in the United States falls on the last Monday in May and honors people who died while serving in the military. It is not the same observance as Canada's Remembrance Day on 11 November.
For a Memorial Day Mass, make the remembrance explicit once and retain prayer for peace, people in difficulty and the local community. A national observance does not by itself determine the Mass formulary or readings. Ask the celebrant to confirm the liturgical celebration.
These replacements keep the dead and living mourners distinct. They ask for mercy and comfort without declaring that military service guarantees salvation.
Replacement deceased intention — use instead of an existing intention, not in addition: For those who died while serving in the armed forces, that God may forgive their sins and grant them eternal rest.
Replacement suffering intention — use instead of an existing intention, not in addition: For families mourning a loved one lost in military service, that the Lord may sustain their hope and bring them comfort.

Can both civilians and service members be included?
Yes. The Church’s prayer can remember all who have died through war and all who continue to suffer because of it.
Can these be used at a civil remembrance ceremony?
They may offer suitable starting language, but the ceremony’s structure differs from Mass. The person leading prayer should arrange the roles and wording accurately.
Should a national silence become an extra petition?
A planned silence can be observed in the appropriate place. Do not automatically add it as another numbered intention or confuse a civil ceremony’s order with the Mass.
