Prayers of the Faithful for First Holy Communion
At a First Holy Communion Mass, the children’s celebration belongs to the whole parish. The intentions should be simple enough for them to understand while remaining prayers that every member of the congregation can share. These sets include a brief petition for those receiving Communion for the first time and a prayer for the people who support them. As we give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist, let us pray to our loving Father for all his people.

For the Church in places of poverty and conflict, that God may provide faithful ministers and sustain her works of mercy.

For all nations, that God may turn hearts toward peace and grant wisdom to those who hold public office.
We pray to the Lord.
For those whose work is insecure or whose strength is failing, that God may provide support and renew their courage.
We pray to the Lord.
For the children receiving Holy Communion for the first time, that Jesus may keep them close and strengthen their faith.
We pray to the Lord.
For those who have died without family or friends beside them, that God may receive them into his merciful care.
We pray to the Lord.
For parents, families, and catechists, that the Lord may bless their care and give them strength in all their needs.

Can a First Communion child read a petition?
The parish may choose suitable readers and help them prepare. These brief intentions avoid long clauses and unfamiliar language. A child should have time to practise and feel comfortable before the celebration.
Should every intention mention Communion?
No. One or two references are enough. The Universal Prayer also brings the needs of the Church, the world, people who suffer, and the local community before God.
Can I replace “children” with “candidates” or a name?
Yes, where it accurately describes the celebration. For a group, collective wording is usually clearer than a list of names. The priest or catechist can help choose the most natural phrase.
